Capstone project 4th visit

On wednesday April 3, 2013 I spent a total of 9 hours with my mentor. I got to experience seeing a biopsy for the first time it was pretty intresting. The reason why the biopsy was being done was because the patient was dicovered to have an area around the jaw to be less dense on the bone then its surrounding. A small insicion was made to get a bit of sample tissue and blood just to make sure its not cancerous or anything. After the samples were collected they were sent to UCSF for further evaluation.  I also continued to learn how to talk to patients and how to set up rooms for surgeries. You must be very careful while cleaning the surgery rooms. You must wear gloves at all times. And one of the top rule is avoid cross contamination. They take cross contamination very seriously. This also includes while steralizing the surgical tools. This is while you should never touch the dirty tools with the clean ones. You have to be changing gloves every minuite. It gave me the chance to learn how to properly handle these situations safely without any complications. I am not sure when the next time i will be meeting with my mentor but i hope to get more experience on steralization.

Capstone mentor hours visit 3

On Tuesday April 2, 2013 i spent a total of 9 hours with my mentor. I got the chance to see a few implants be placed. Implant procedure is little bit more complex and more teering of the tissue and bone then a wisdom tooth removal. The Oral Surgeon uses more anesthesia for this procedure. The surgeon must use a screw to measure the size of the implants. The screw is drilled into where the tooth should be. Then after the doctor is done putting in the screw they clean up the area the best they can. After the procedure is done the patient comes back in a few months to get his implants or other patients get their implants the same day. I also got to learn the about the tools they use to do these procedures. And i also got to see how to treat the patient when they first arrive and how to put them at ease. Some patients come in really nervous so they ask a lot of questions and you have to simply explain it to them step by step. I was taught how to clean the rooms and set them up for the next surgery. I felt like it was a really productive day. In my next visit which will be on wendesday April 3 i hope to see a biopsy be done and also learn moreon how to steralize surgical tools and how to prepare rooms before surgery.

capstone mentor hours

On Monday April 1, 2013 I spent a total of 9 hours with my mentor. I got to experience seeing wisdom teeths being pulled out. There was some patients that were only having one wisdom tooth pulled out, while others had to have three to four wisdom teeth pulled out. Patients must go under I.V before going under the procedure. Its amazing how the I.V goes into effect in less then a minuite. I got to see step by step how a wisdom tooth is pulled out. Sometimes some patients tooths must be pulled out by parts and for others the tooth is removed in one whole piece. Enable for the Oral Surgeon to remove the tooth he must dettache the gums from the tooth. This will avoid any damage to the gums while the tooth is being pulled out. After the tooth is removed the surgeon must place stitches to close back the gums again this is only required when its not a wisdom tooth. After a wisdom tooth is removed a hole is left in the area where the tooth was removed. For young people the hole will be covered by bone over the time but, unfortunetly for older people bone no longer grows to cover that area. A wisdom removal procedure do not last for hours it can take up to 35 to 40 minutes. i must have seen atleast 10 wisdom removal procedure be done. In my next visit wich will be in April 2nd i plan to see implants be placed.

time writing (courageous)

Have you ever been in a situation where you had to act different, then you normally would? Well there are some situations where people can become a whole different person without even trying. For example, some people might become courageous to do something they would normally do. Natural instincts take over the human brain when different situation emerge causing to act a different behavior.
I personally have came across a situation in my life that made me act courageous in a split second. It was the jets versus the saints super bowl. I was at a friends house with some few other friends watching the game. After the game was over and it was getting pretty late. Me and my friend where about to go home since we lived close to each other. Me and my friend were being walked to the car by three of my other friends. When we were saying goodbye a punch of guys at least 8 to 9 people came rushing at us. We had no idea why they were doing that but, all we had to do was defend ourselves.
Throughout the fight I was seeing my friends getting hit by many other guys including myself. There was a point

Mentor hours

On febuary 2, 2013  i spent a total of 9 hours with my mentor. I got to see surgeries be performed while doing extractions. The patients were put to sleep under I.V. The anesthesia is responsive in less then 1 minute. Observing the surgeries did not gross me out it was acually very intresting to see even though there was alot of blood involved. Patients do not feel anything under I.V. During the surgery some patients woke up, but were still under I.V. When patient tried to talk they just mumbled. Learning to talk to the patinets was very intresting. I learned how to talk to patients and getting them ready before any procedure is done. Every time an assistant is placing more anesthesia in the patient, they must say how many anesthesia is being put in the patient out loud. For example 2 CC of lidocaine being put. They have assistants coming in and out of the room. The doctor has a button next to him so he can call for assistance. Before procedures facial Iodine is placed on the face to clean the area. After the surgery patients are still under anesthesia and are unable to drive so a family member or a friend must pick the patient up and patient is helped to the car. Learning about the tools they use for procedures was very intresting. For Example a mallat, which is like a hammer that is pounded to split a tooth so it can be taken out by parts (wisdom teeth). I also learned that the Surgeon barley has anytime to eat if they are lucky they have atleast 10 minutes of lunch. In my next visit ( 2 weeks or so) i hope to see a biopsy be performed and also see other more critical surgeries be done. I also tend to learn more about the tools they use and remembering the names.

The decision to the dark side

Carlos Pacheco

The decision to the dark side

In the Thrilling movie "Star Wars Revenge of the Sith" the chosen Jedi Anakin faces making the decision between choosing the path to the good or dark side. Anakin leads himself towards the dark side that cost him his wife's death and his royalty to the Jedi Council. Soon he will realize that his whole is about to change for the worst.

The decision that Anakin makes that leads him to the dark side is when he decides to do everything to save his wife. The reason I believe this is the decision that lead Anakin to the dark side is because when Anakin went to go talk to Yoda about his problem about having visions of his wife dying and Yoda tells him in the following quote. "Careful you must be when sensing the future Anakin, the fear of loss is a path to the dark side" says Yoda. Yoda's advice to Anakin is to let go of everything he fears to lose. Even after Yoda's advice Anakin said he won't let his visions come true that when he takes the path to the dark side.

Chancellor Palpatine had a great impact on Anakin on joining the dark side. Anakin discovers that Chancellor Palpatine is the Sith Lord because he knows the way of the force he is trained to use the dark side of the force. Chancellor Palpatine knew the Jedi council didn't rust him. he tries to encourage Anakin to join the dark side by telling him that the Jedi council does not trust him because he has too much power that's why they don't make him a master. Chancellor Palpatine was not actually totally lying because the Jedi Council didn't really trust Anakin. The reason why was they saw confusion in him, therefore they think he is not ready.

Anakin begins to act very aggressive towards others. Chancellor Palpatine tells Anakin that he must learn the dark side of the force so he can save his wife. Since Anakin told the Jedi Council that Chancellor Palpatine is the Sith lord they went to go arrest him. As they were about to arrest him he fought back killing some of the Jedi Council members, but master Mace Windu almost defeated him until Anakin interfered by killing master Mace Windu because he believed the Sith Lord is the only one that could save his wife, therefore Anakin killed master Mace Windu. After Anakin kills master Mace Windu the Sith Lord names Anakin Dark-Vador and Anakin calls him master. The Sith Lord tells Anakin Obi-Wan Kenobi is now an enemy of the Republic and Anakin's respond is I understand.
This is why I believe that when Anakin decided to do everything to save his wife it lead him in the path towards the dark side. If he would have let go none of this would have happened. Anakin concentrated on doing everything to save his wife, but ignored everything else. Therefore the life of the Jedi faded while the path to the dark side widened.

The Knight

The Middle Ages was a very interesting part of history. If I was too had been alive in the middle Ages I would have most likely been a knight. Knights where a very interesting part of the middle Ages and also one if the most violent. The reason why I chose knight is because a knight today would kind of be like a Marine which I plan to be.
I live in a palace honored by the people of my kingdom with my wife and kids. I face a very big challenge which is jousting meaning going against another knight head on with a big stick. The goal of this sport is to knock your opponent off of his horse. Me and my family are very happy together. My family and I don’t worry about money or anything like that. I feel like the world is great as long as I keep my reputation as a great knight. I have a lot of intense military training. The things that I value the most would be my family and friends. My plans for my future are to become the best knight and be recognized in other kingdoms.
This is the reason why I believe I would be a knight in the middle ages. I have the thought and potential of a knight but more modern. This is why a knight is a very interesting part of history.
